- Using the Quote INIT (v1.1)
- July 3, 1987
- Lincoln D. Stein
-
- This INIT was inspired by Philip Borenstein’s elegant desk accessory,
- SmartQuotes. Its function is identical to SmartQuotes. When active the INIT
- replaces neutral double quotes (") with quote pairs (“”) and neutral single
- quotes (') with apostrophes (’). The substitution can be turned on and off by
- typing the command-shift-key combination of your choice. The major difference
- between this INIT and the SmartQuotes DA is that the INIT is global. Once
- invoked it is active in all applications until specifically deactivated. It can
- be configured to become active automatically at system startup.
-
- HOW TO INSTALL IT:
- I have provided a simple “generator” program that will create the INIT file.
- The generator allows you to specify the key used in conjunction with
- command-shift to turn the quote substitution on and off. Any lowercase
- alphabetic or numeric key will work. The generator also allows you to specify
- whether the INIT will become active automatically at startup or whether it will
- wait for you to activate it (by giving the appropriate command-shift-key
- command.) When the generator is done, put the resulting INIT file into your
- system folder. To remove the INIT, just delete the file or move it out of the
- system folder.
-
- HOW TO USE IT:
- The INIT is turned on and off by hitting the selected shift-command-key
- combination. When activated the INIT will give a long beep to tell you it’s
- working. Upon deactivation the INIT will give a short beep. Activation and
- deactivation are very rapid, so you can toggle back and forth with ease.
- Although the INIT is pretty good at guessing which of the open/close pair you
- want, it will sometimes make a mistake. Erase the incorrect quote by
- backspacing and retype it to insert the correct one.
-
- NOTES ON COMPATABILITY:
- As far as I can determine this INIT will work everywhere. Be aware that
- telecommunications systems and BBS’s generally won’t accept the curly quotes and
- apostrophes -- turn off the quote substitution if this is a problem. Let me
- know of any software incompatabilities you find.
-
-
- NEW IN VERSION 1.1:
- The INIT now correctly handles single quote pairs (‘’) even if they’re nested
- within double quotes. It is also smart enough to recognize the continuation of
- a long quotation through multiple paragraphs and make the typographically
- correct substitution.
-
- This INIT is free. If you like it please distribute it, along with this
- documentation. If you experience major problems with this INIT or think of ways
- that it might be improved, please write me at 44 Boynton St. #2, Jamaica Plain,
- MA 02130.
